Duck Care
This page will be a guide to caring for your duck.
I will be adding to it overtime, so keep coming back for updates.
In the video below is a Black-bellied Whistling Duck with Angel wing disease – This is where the duck wing grows out too much. It is caused by feeding the ducks too much protein in their diet. The condition does correct itself once the right diet is eaten.
Sometimes it’s the ducks that help their human owners…
OK, now ever needed to know what a hatching duckling looks like? Take a look here. See how they’re not handled? That’s exactly the way they should be treated.

Thank you for the very useful info.
I had 8 ducks in my yard
3 were robbed at Christmas!
Now the balance 5 are still mucking up the garden
Do they necessarily need a pond?
Please let me know the weeds which are favourites with them
Thanks again
Shyanka
Hi Shyanka,
So nice to hear from you!
Oh, gosh, I’m sorry about your ducks! Do you know whether they were robbed by a person, or maybe taken by an animal predator, such as a fox, or even wild cat? I always build a solid shelter for my ducks because I’ve had it happen to me as well, and it’s definitely not something I want to go through again.
As regards a pond for your ducks, or lack thereof, ducks do not need any kind of pool to swim around in, as long as they have a supply of fresh water to drink. It’s a myth that rearing ducks is hard, and that you’ll need to build them a large lake in order for them to survive. Like I said, just make sure they have enough water to drink throughout they day and they will be very content.
My ducks eat all the weeds in my garden, indiscriminately! It’s fantastic, they’re nature’s little mowers. So, don’t worry about what kind of weeds to give them – as long as they look happy, they’re fine.
I think you would be interested in my ebook, which is coming out real soon, actually. I’ve written about all my experiences with ducks, how to hatch them, how to rear them, what they eat, what to watch out for… you name it, I’ve been through it and I’ve written about it so you don’t have to worry. So keep a close eye out!
Have a great day!
